The course is assessed to the level prescribed by the Family Mediation Council. It is required to pass this Foundation Training course before being able to register with the Family Mediation Council as a family mediator.

Approach

The course is assessed both by the trainers and by an independent assessor. The trainers will work with the participants during the course to help them reach the required level of competence, which will hopefully enable them to pass the course.

The trainers will be observing and assessing all participants during the training programme. They will be assessing:

∞ Their understanding and ability to absorb new concepts, skills and to demonstrate competence.

∞ Their aptitude as a family mediator.

∞ Their commitment to the role and tasks.

∞ Their achievement of a satisfactory level of the FMC professional competencies as outlined in FMC Manual of Professional Standards and Self-regulatory Framework.

After the course, an external assessor will check the trainers' continuous assessment; assess the video recording of the practice assessment; and assess the written assignments after Module 3.

Methods

∞ Role plays: different role plays take place during the first seven days of the course, which are assessed using observation forms.

∞ Videoed role play: during day 7, a role play will be videoed and sent to the external assessor for assessment

∞ Presentations: between Modules 2 and 3, the participants will prepare a presentation about one of the theoretical subjects identified in the Theoretical underpinnings within the Professional Competence Standards. This presentation takes place on day 8.

∞ Group discussions: the participants are assessed on their contributions to the group discussions using observation forms.

∞ Written assignments: the participants are required to write four assignments.

These are:

a) Q&A assignment between Modules 1 and 2, about principles and key skills in mediation

b) Parenting plan between Modules 1 and 2.

Q&A assignment after Module 3, about key subjects covered during the course.

c) Memorandum of Understanding and Open Financial Statement after Module 3, based on one of the role plays used during the course.

Feedback to participants

Ongoing feedback is provided to participants throughout the course, for example during the role plays, which allows the trainers to offer extra support to those that need it.

Following the completion of the training programme and the marking of all written material, notification goes to each participant as to whether they have passed the Foundation Training course. If they have not, an indication of any further requirement will be sent to them with feedback on what needs to be completed.

Those participants whose either written or video assesments do not meet the standard for passing, will be given support in the form of feedback (written in principle, oral if necessary) and one more opportunity to resubmit or do a role play to be re-recorded, and be re-assessed.
