Programme overview



This intense five day training in Mediation for Family Workers is designed to help you gain the capability and confidence to understand, implement, manage and lead mediation processes in the family context.


This course is approved by the College of Mediators. The learning integrates theoretical, practical and self-reflective aspects. You will learn about conflict and mediation within different family contexts, the practical skills and mindsets needed to be a mediator, the process of mediation and methods to continue your professional development.


The format of the course includes pre-course reading, face-to-face delivery, group discussions, practical exercises, simulations of detailed mediation scenarios and personal study and reflection.




Aims & learning outcomes



  • To identify and understand the nature and causes of conflict in families
  • To recognise the process of conflict escalation and its symptoms
  • To understand and apply core values and key mediation principles
  • To develop and demonstrate key communication and mediation skills
  • To lead and manage a mediation process, including preparation, individual meetings, joint sessions, drafting of agreements and follow up
  • To get to know oneself as a mediator and how to improve continuously, including reflecting on how one’s own stereotypes and prejudices might affect the ability to mediate.
