This is a special opportunity to start your journey towards becoming a family mediator in a perfect setting deep in the Welsh countryside. You will be able to learn and practise away from the distractions and pressures of commuting and everyday life. This will give you the space and time to really focus on understanding the core elements in greater depth.
The Residential Course enables you to spend more time in the company of your colleagues as well as with the trainers and assessors, all of them experienced mediators. You will be able to reflect together on each day’s experiences and learning.
We believe that being a successful mediator involves, among other things, the ability to bring a sense of calm to conflicts which are frequently fueled by fear and anxiety.
Our Residential Course helps you to do just that. Like our name “Ataraxy”, we hope to provide a place free from emotional disturbance and anxiety where you can enjoy learning and bring peace to others.
Programme overview
This intense eight day accredited foundation training in Family Mediation is designed to help you gain the capability and confidence to understand, implement, manage and lead family mediation processes.
Approved by the Family Mediation Council, this course integrates theoretical and practical learning, including self-reflective aspects.
You will learn about:
- conflict and mediation within the family context
- practical skills and mindsets needed to be a mediator
- the process of mediation
- relevant legal knowledge
- methods to continue your professional development in your journey as a family mediator.
The format of the course includes pre-course reading, face-to-face delivery, group discussions, practical exercises, simulations of detailed mediation scenarios and personal study and reflection.
The assessment process involves an assessed role play, reflective logs and some written work; these are explained in more detail in the documentation sent after registration.

This Residential Course is held at Waunifor Centre, originally a historic estate steeped in history. It has six traditional and homely stone self-catering holiday cottages, all full of character and charm.
Waunifor is an oasis of peace on the borders of Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion and close to Pembrokeshire. It is located along a quiet rural lane close to the small town of Llandysul, only a 40 minute drive from the end of the M4.
